Dep't of Webcomic Pimpage
Newsflash: I read a lot of webcomics! I want other people to read a lot of webcomics too, because webcomics are the shit (and likewise the people who make them), but it occurred to me lately that I haven't really been keeping up with the pimpage. I'll try and stay on top of that, but in the meantime, here are a handful of comics that I think could use some additional love. Additional love from you.
- Jonny Crossbones – An old-school, deep-fried, clear-line, two-fisted adventure comic! This used to have an incomplete archive, as the author was holding material back pending the story's release as a book, but the book got cancelled on account of Hard Times. Consequently: 1. You can go read the whole thing (up to the still-in-progress section) right now, and 2. The author could use a few bucks, if you gots 'em.
- Sam & Fuzzy – Difficult to describe, complicated storyline to catch up on, uneven early chapters... but extremely rewarding. It's one of those comics that starts out as mildly-diverting nonsense, but evolves into something gripping and fascinating and emotionally authentic while remaining funny. It satisfies on many levels.
- GastroPhobia – Single-mom Amazon warrior slapstick hijinks. Adorable artwork, consistently hilarious.
- Tweep – Straight-up ensemble sitcom silliness. An... oddly soothing comic. It just makes me really happy.
- Daisy Owl – A newcomer on the scene, and very very funny. One of the few comics I've seen that really lets the kid characters be kids while still cracking grown-up jokes—the Calvin & Hobbes comparison is inevitable, and while I don't think it's particularly apt on any direct level, I do think author Ben Driscoll learned the right lessons from Waterson. A seriously good strip.
Bonus level: MS Paint Adventures – The weirdest motherfucker of a webcomic you will see all year. You wanna see the limits of the form get pushed? Brace for the punishing assault of Andrew Hussie's ULTIMATE LIMIT-PUSHER!
Oh, and Dep't of Tech Evangelism: as usual, I urge all readers of webcomics to find themselves a good RSS reader, because it makes life better.
