Webcomics** that I read "regularly:"***
Short form - that is to say, governed by the conceptual unit of the "strip:"
- Written by men: 25.
- Written by women: 11.
- Written by a team composed of both men and women:* 2
Long form - that is to say, governed by the conceptual unit of the "page:"
- Written by men: 5.
- Written by women: 8.
- Written by a team composed of both men and women: 1
Pointless Math:
- Men: 66% of short form, 36% of long form, 58% total.
- Women: 29% of short form, 57% of long form, 37% total.
- Both: 5%, 7%, and 6%.
Yeah, whatever. Where're you trying to go with this?
Y'know, I'm not really sure. That particular conversation rises up from the grave about once a year (though I think it's currently in its dormant phase), but it just occurred to me that I'd never gone in with actual numbers in hand. And then I remembered how, if more than a third of the room is female, most of the people asked to estimate will say that they outnumber the men. So I figured it was worth a count.
Anyone else? Numbers?
_____
* A Softer World counts. Smithson doesn't.
** Aside from always picking up the latest Finder and Scott Pilgrim (which conveniently cancel each other out), I don't read any print comics "regularly."
*** I realize that looks like a fuck of a lot of comics. The magic of LJ and a good RSS reader keep me from looking like a lab rat repeatedly hitting his cocaine button.

Uh, wow, that's the first time I've gotten sucked into reading all the fuck about a massive LJ meta wank. I usually manage to just read the basics and move on; not really sure what happened this time.
Anyway, I suppose I welcome our new Russian overlords. If I have to.
EDIT: Also: Holy freaking balls, Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together! (It's really good, guys.)

I know it sounds counterintuitive, on account of the weird way it seems to tack away from your destination, but I'm gonna recommend going past the Section 8 housing on 6th, doing a left+right to get on the Hiawatha Line bike stub-trail, then south on 11th past the Metrodome, right on 14th past Elliot Park, jog over to 15th using Chicago and let the weird curve-thing take you onto 16th around the south side of the convention center, then go south on 3rd and turn right once you hit the MIA. Alternately, hang a right on 18th and take Nicollet across Franklin; the latter gives you a shorter light, but you might get delayed by oncoming traffic right in front of your goal, whereas the right turn at MIA lets you sneak up right around the side of Spyhouse. It's going to depend on the time of day and which lights you can get away with running.
Real MPLS bike punks probably have a better route, and I admit that a combination of an ill-timed 55 train plus heavy traffic on Franklin will fuck you over, but let me tell you, the Cedar --> Franklin route is a big old red herring unless you're headed to Midtown, and even then you'll be better off on Minnehaha. The suggestion of Riverside, we'll just chalk up to Mitch having moved to Texas a few years ago.

God, finally! Two years after PlanetOut let me down, I have, at long last, tracked down the holy grail of Bitter Girl archives. Awesome.
Yes, I am addicted to lesbian soap/sitcom comic strips. Don't even judge.

So I went to the Douglas Wolk / Austin Grossman reading/presentation/panel/event at MCAD tonight, and it was pretty sweet -- the thing itself was pretty engaging, plus I got to hang out with Steve Burt and Jesse, who I haven't seen for a while and who are moving to Massachusetts to accommodate his new professorial gig at Harvard. (Dang. No more hanging out with the cats, I guess.)
Anyway, I learned a great many things, but I specifically want to share this conversation from the final leg of the afterparty.
Rod: Well, [the Old Stillwater Prison]'s gone, now. Michael: What? Rod: Yeah. Arson. These 17-year-old kids. Burned it down. Michael: Seriously? Rod: Yeah, they were, like, these quasi-urban-explorers, and they broke into the place to go look around and they found all these birds, nailed to the wall. Nick (entering conversation): What? HOLY CROW. Rod: That was the most visible thing; they found all this other evidence of, like... Nick: Of serious evil? Rod: Yeah, pretty much. And they were just like, "This place is evil; we must destroy it." So they took some videotape of it and then just torched the place and left. Michael: Did they get caught? Rod: Well, the cops caught up with them pretty quickly; I don't think anything particularly serious happened to 'em. Michael: Anyway, I get the feeling this is all coming back around to-- Rod: That's right, the Circle Pond Cave Satanists. Michael: I knew it.
(I'll skip past the part about the eviscerated goat stuffed with fruit. This has been your Cautionary Tale of the Outer Suburbs for the day.)

Why yes, I do intend to get some writing done today. Just as soon as I inhale that stack of Bleach tankoubon that I got from the library.
It's been a goodly while since I got hyped up about a manga, so this is a nice change of pace. Anyway, I like it. It's got kind of a Buffy-the-Vampire-Slayer-on-speed sort of vibe, I really like the characterization, the pace is decent,* and honestly, how can you not love their frowny little faces? Even the annoying characters are awesome.
_____ * Except for the chapter where Orihime manifested her powers, but really, he kind of set himself up for a stumble on that one.

I can't stand One Piece.
I mean, the art is awesomely goofy, and the story engine seems like it ought to be solid. But it's completely unreadable. And unwatchable, too--actually, I saw the tv show first, and figured something had been horribly damaged in the adaptation process, but no, it actually stays remarkably faithful to the manga's flaws.
I was trying to succinctly describe what bugs me so much about it, and the best I could come up with was "Too Much Damn Hollerin'." No matter what's going on, everyone always seems able to spare twenty seconds to bellow out an unsubtle summary of current events, an update on their emotional state, a stirring declaration of eternal friendship, or a defense of their thesis paper: "THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE! A deontological approach to the hermeneutics of HE'S SOME KIND OF MONSTER!" Nothing--nothing, dammit--happens without the reader getting a view of someone's molars and a lecture. Plus, all the villains make their entrance by stomping on a puppy. The same puppy.
But everyone else fucking loves it. Hell, the song I've been obsessing over lately is the theme from the One Piece movie. I'm either missing something, or I've developed a hypersensitivity to something that other people aren't bothered by.

I'm just gonna say it: Spider-Man is a douchebag.
Mind you, I don't mean that in the metaphorical sense; I mean it in the hard technical sense. That is to say, he squirts toxic chemicals into peoples' vaginas.
